Eating Mindfully: How Does it Really Work?

Coleen submitted a brief, evidence based video, explaining the principles of mindful eating. "This video was produced by Ocean Entertainment, a Nova Scotia, Canadian, film company. Coleen prepared and presented the content, based on Jan Chozen-Bays' Mindful Eating book, along with content from Jean Kristeller's MB-EAT facilitator program she took in 2011, and the numerous resources she's read thanks to TCME. Coleen Nolan is a Halifax-based registered dietitian and yoga teacher who is passionate about mindful living. She uses evidence-based principles to help clients achieve their best health. Her services are available at two clinics in the Halifax area, as well as in the workplace and community. Ellen Resnick is a psychotherapist in private practice in San Francisco and Redwood City, CA. She specializes in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and incorporates the use of mindfulness into the treatment of depression, anxiety, and emotional overeating. Ellen is also a skilled couples' therapist. Ellen’s interest in behavior change as it relates to health and well being grew out of her work with people with diabetes in 1990 at California Pacific Medical Center. Ellen is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the department of psychiatry at UCSF where she worked from 1995-2003 specializing in women’s mental health issues and brief treatment. She ran the Cognitive Behavioral therapy group program for women with depression. Ellen continues to supervise psychiatry residents at UCSF. Raised in the hospitality industry, Katie Sheen is inspired by how food can bring people together and form the heart of happy memories. Years of study has deepened her understanding of food’s complex relationship with physical and psychological health, and the Soul Nutrition website brings together three well-being tools developed for her Masters Degree in Education: Nourish, The Happiness Calendar and SHIFT.      Katie teaches nutrition, mindfulness and positive psychology techniques to a wide range of audiences, with a particular emphasis on gratitude, appreciation, compassion and active acceptance. She continues to develop her mindfulness practice with the Heart of Manchester Sangha.   

Jean Fain, MSW, LICSW, is a Harvard Medical School-affiliated psychotherapist and the author of “The Self-Compassion Diet.” In addition to seeing individual clients in her Concord, Mass. private practice, she runs groups and workshops on self-compassion for eating issues. She also writes about food and body-image issues for newspapers (from the Boston Globe to the LA Times), magazines (O: The Oprah Magazine, Shape, Self...) and on-line publications (NPR, Huffington Post). www.jeanfain.com
